 Future Prospects of Bio plastics

Bio plastics are getting attention as a promising replacement of regular plastics. However, there are still some problems with bio plastic that needs to be solved.

(1) Class competitiveness must be secured.
(2) Property of matter such as heat-resistance, processability and shock-resistance needs to be improved
(3) Manufacturing technology needs to be improved; application area needs to be expanded.
(4) Products with more than 1 year expiration date needs compensate the defects such as tailorability.
(5) Standardization and establishing standards.

Especially, fermented foods like Red pepper paste, Soybean paste, Kimchi, Salted fish, Cheese are highly likely to have living microorganisms in the product and have long expiration date, hence making it necessary to have a longer decomposition time. Also, while distributing and keeping, there are chances that gas like CO2 might occur. For this reason, researches needed to be done to allow air to flow inside the packages.

Nowadays, the bio polymer manufacturing technology is developing, and price competition is being strengthened, so a rapid expansion in the market can be expected. Whereas petroleum propylene’s manufacturing cost is $2 / ton, biodegradable plastics like PLA, aliphatic polyester, TPS, and PHA s’ manufacturing cost $3~5 / ton. A biomass plastic, which has compensated the defects of biodegradable plastics, maintains $2~3 / ton.

Lately, infinite resources such as yearly crop, marine algae, and industrial waste are being used. Instead of using edible resources, active research development is taking place using inedible organic waste resources as well as giving the products more functionality, and solidity. As a result, the application area of bio plastics is likely to expand very rapidly.
