 Types of Biomass

 

Generally, the Carbon in the atmosphere implies the photosynthesized plant resources. However in the field of industrial plastic resources, the biodegradable plastics under the field of biomass.

 

(1) Herbaceous energy plants
Takes 2~3years to grow and able to harvest every year.
- Switchgrass, cattail, bamboo, sugar cane, tall fescue, etc. are such plants.

 

(2) Short-term woody plants
Takes 5~8 years to harvest.
- Broadleaf tree type, poplar, willow, saccharinum, green ash tree, black walnut tree, liquidambar, etc.

 

(3) Industrial plants
The plants to produce particular chemical substances.
 

- Straws, castor-oil plant.

 

(4) Crops
The crops to produce other chemical substances like sugar, oil and plastic.

- Corn starch, corn oil, soybean oil and other plant oils.

 

(5) Underwater biomass resources
-Algal, large marine plants, seaweeds, marine microorganism, etc.

 

(6) Agriculture crop residues

The crops yet to be harvested or far from being commercially distributed.

- Stems and leaves like corn stalk, wheat straw, rice straw, etc.

 

(7) Forestry waste

The waste which are produced during forest maintenance job, such as removing dead trees.

Not lumbered needleleaf trees, broadleaf trees, or those trees which have been excluded from lumber camp.

 

(8) City waste

The wastes from homes, businesses, and industries.

- Discarded paper, cardboards, furniture wastes, plastics wastes, etc.

 

(9) By-products and wastes
The by-products and wastes from the whole process of making biomass.
- Tree barks, branches, leaves, corn starches, etc.

 

(10) Biodegradable plastics raw materials
Cellouse, Pectin, Chitin, PLA (Polylactic acid), PCL (Polycaprolactone), PEU (Polyester urethane), AP(Alipahatic Polyestr), Alo/Ali (Aromatic/Aliphatic copolyester) Bio-PDO (Propanediol), CA(Celluouse Acetate), PGA (Ployglycolicacid), PBS (Polybutylene succinate), PHB (Polyhydroxybutyrate), PVA(Polyvinylalcohol) TPS (Thermoplastic starch), PVA (Poly Viinyl Alcohol), PHA (Poly Hydroxy alkanoate PHB & PHV's copolymer) etc.

 

(11) Others
Wastes and energy from farms and meat processing which can be used to make various products.
Recently, the unlimited resources such as 1-year term crops, marine plants, and industrial wastes are being used. Also researches are increasing in the use of non-edible organic  wastes.
  

 Biomass product application area 

Mostly the biomass products are used as energy sources, however this page is focused on replaceable plastics, industrial products, architectural civil engineering, and packaging area,

 

(1) Recyclable plastics
The plastics which are produced by biomass resources show great expectations to replace the petrochemical product plastics.
- Biomass, TPS(Theomo Plastics Starch), PLA(PolyLatic Acid), PHB ( PolyHydroxyButyric acid), and themoplasticity protein etc..

 

(2) Natural Fiber
Paper products, woven goods, various types of strings, and fibers are made from biomass. Pulps and paper manufacturing processes are being improved and technology to use other sources of supply are being developed. New products based on natural fiber includes insulators and geotextiles. These fibers are also in the process of replacing unrecyclable products.

 

(3) Natural construction material
Construction materials like reinforced lumber and panels are usually made from wood. Newly combined materials with biomass fibers (other plastics, plant powder, cement, calcium carbonate and talc) like MDF panels are being made.

-Food, agriculture, forestry and fisheries materials: mulching films, fishing nets, etc

        - Constructional materials: insulator, anti-landslide, etc.
 
        -Outdoor products: Golf tee, fishing bait, marine sports, hiking, and other disposable products.

Areas difficult to withdraw and reuse after use
 

- Plastic wraps and containers: Fish trays, instant food containers, fast-food containers,

  lunch boxes, cup-noodles, etc.

 
 

-  Hygiene items: paper diapers, sanitary pad, etc.

 

-  Office items, daily necessaries, stationary items: pen case, disposable razor, practice

  shells(BB-guns), toys, disposable syringe, razor, etc.
